The XL-TDR by Nuvasive was an investigational lateral lumbar total disc replacement arthroplasty device that was ultimately not approved for use in the US based on higher rates of HO in the IDE studies. The disc featured a metal-on-metal ball-and-socket design composed of Cobalt-chrome-molybenum with a titanium plasma sprayed coating and HA (hydroxyapatite) coating for osseointegration. It was intended for implantation via the direct lateral retroperitoneal transpsoas approach (XLIF). The lateral approach is favored for disc replacement due to ability to maintain integrity of ALL which leads to less facet loading.
